In January 2014 Gemalto announced their next generation chips supporting Java ME 8. Could you give an approximate time till we see development boards sporting these chips available from 3rd party resellers like MC Technologies?
Hi Roy,
Currently there is no official statement available for this project. Due to the Christmas time it is also hard to get any new information from anyone who could make at least a brief comment on this. I will try to get some news soon.
I just got an information that there are no official news regarding Java 8 yet. But we will definitely announce it on the developer zone when available. Could you please let us know if Java 8 is somehow required in your project?
Thanks for your prompt response Michael.
One of the hardware reference platforms for Java ME 8 is the Freescale FRDM-K64F board. After setting up Java it only leaves 60 kb of RAM for running applications.
Version 1 of OpenHAB currently runs acceptably well on top of a full Linux stack on a Raspberry Pi. The main requirement for running OpenHAB is the Equinox OSGi container.
A major design goal for OpenHAB 2, currently available as an alpha release, is the optimization for embedded platforms (e.g. by replacing Equinox with the more lightweight Concierge OSGi container).
What I would like to do is run OpenHAB 2 on an embedded platform that supports Java ME 8.
Hi Roy,
This sounds very interesting. I hope we will have a good news for you soon. Meanwhile I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy NY!
Hi Michael,
Sorry to nag but have there been any further developments/reports on this topic?
Thanks
Roy
Hello Roy,
Currently there is still no official news regarding Java ME 8 support. Any official announcement is planned at the moment. So you should not expect it in the nearest future. There will be official information if anything changes.
