Force BGS2 onto 1800 band only - for testing | Telit Cinterion IoT Developer Community

Hi all,
I am testing new PCB using BGS2-E. Have tuning / matching done for dual band 900 / 1800 bands. Fine, now confirming performance in more real-life scenarios using ^MONI command. Very useful comparisons with dev board, different tuned boards, and a PCB with competitor 2G modem. The competing modem has a command that allows it to only use a particular band. But I see no way of forcing the BGS2 to use the 1800 band. Therefore I cannot run any meaningful 'real-life' comparisons using ^MONI on the upper band. That is a significant handicap for my validation of the product. True, I will be sending the product to a lab in a few months, but in advance of that I wanted to have most of the work done and the lab would only be confirming, broadly speaking, what I have done already. Did I miss a command? Any ideas.

Hello,
Indeed there is no setting to select just one band.
With AT^MONI you get the serving cell parameters, so if the module is using the band 1800 you get the data for 1800 band. You just need to know which band is being used. You could discover it based on ARFCN which is a part of SMONI reply.
There is a possibility to select the mobile operator with AT+COPS command - this could help if there is an operator that uses only 1800 in your area.
The above workarounds are not perfect but you could try if they work for you.

Thanks for confirming this, Bartłomiej. Unfortunately in my area only one operator has cells in the 1800 band but they also have overlapping cells in the 900 band, and they are a little stronger and the modem rarely selects the higher band. It is a little surprising that this feature is missing. I would be very surprised if I was the first customer that expressed an interest, and I think it's usefulness is obvious to small and medium size customers who don't have a full (and costly) GSM simulation environment. Nevertheless, we will have to live with it for now. I don't suppose this is on the roadmap for a future release?

Hello,
Thank you for your input.
Unfortunately I don't have the information about the details of future releases to publish.
One more idea that comes to my mind is the jammer with the option to select frequencies to be jammed.
