OpenWrt Raspberry Pi networking MBIM

Showcase, November 5, 2020 - 1:16pm, 4716 views

This article will help you quickly take a Raspberry Pi and configure it as an Internet Router.

We focus on OpenWrt 22.03.5 software and Telit-Cinterion 5G, 4G, and 3G Cellular module hardware MV31-W and MV32-W. Note that only the newest Raspberry Pi 4 and above will offer true multi-100Mb/s throughput.

Internet connectivity is achieved using the high-performance Mobile Broadband Interface Model (MBIM) method. We use the libmbim command line utilities to drive the module (not AT Commands).

Some older modules such as PLS62-W support MBIM too, though have no dhcp server, so require manual IPv4 configuration; scripts are included to handle this.
